Bio Fouling Prevention Using Silicone Oil based Composition

A. Raja, C. Bhagyanathan and C. Narendhar

Abstract:

Adhesion of the marine fouling microorganisms on the ship hulls causes many problem including extra energy consumptions, high maintenance cost and corrosion. Preventing marine biofouling is an important issue. we report here an Antifouling technique(silicone oil based) to prevent bio corrosion. We used mixture of paint, cashew nut shell resin, Tio2 Nanoparticle with silicon oil on MS36 metal. The corrosion resistance is found to be good. The contact angle (CA) measurement shows (110°) hydrophobicity nature of the coating. All coating material that are sub merged in the sea water for 3month to testing the efficiency of the coating material. The coating is long last, substance is exposed in salinity environment for 3month, and we are found only negligible changes in hydrophobicity of the sample. The hydrophobicity is based on the size of the Tio2 nanoparticles. The coating is helpful for things such as Self cleaning, Ice-resistance, Transparency, Anti contamination and Mechanical robustness. To over best knowledge the coating is Non-toxic and safer to the marine species.
