A Fuzzy Based Soft Switching Converter for Power Factor Correction

K. Yamuna and S. Mutharasu

Abstract:

This paper proposes a new single phase high power factor converter which features regulation by conventional Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) and soft commutation techniques. In conventional power factor correction method PWM and commutation techniques are separately used. In the proposed method Zero Current Switching (ZCS) and Zero Voltage Switching (ZVS) are combined with PWM technique to improve power factor which overcomes the drawback of voltage stress and current stress in conventional method. A separate fuzzy controller is designed to compare voltage and current to generate PWM pulses to the switches. The proposed power factor correction converter has been simulated using MATLAB simulink and power factor of 0.99 with sinusoidal current shape was obtained.
